He started working at 14 when he ran away from home to join the Whiting Log Company in Shulls Mills, NC. Willard said he did everything he could to raise a gang of children: moonshiner, banjo player, flatfoot dancer, saw miller, coal miner, toy carver, and all around character. First cousin of famed musician Doc Watson, Willard found himself in the middle of the folk revival of the 1960s. He travelled the country with the family attending music festivals to dance and sell his handcrafted mountain toys. He was never far away from his beloved wife Ora or “Oly” for long. Ora Greer Watson (1908-2004), was born in Triplett, NC in 1908. 1 of 12 children. She learned to quilt out of necessity as a child, and gained acclaim for her quilts long before Willard got any attention for his toys. Ora developed a personal style notable for its mastery of traditional patterns and use of striking color combinations. Her quilts attracted attention from museums and collectors throughout North Carolina and beyond. Her favorite quilt patterns were the Texas Star, the Bethlehem Star, Log Cabins, and True Lovers Knot. Ora was a legendary cook, who only ever used a wood stove - and she needed to be because they had 7 children; Bonnie, Helen, Herbert, Joe, Pansy, Polly, Sallie, Sidney. In the 1960s the family was invited to the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife, Willard was invited to brew moonshine on the national mall and Ora displayed her quilts. The Smithsonian Museum collection has that moonshine still and an Ora Watson quilt. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/69430c8b8d4a7d585f196dc4/1784313815781-73DIGOC6UL70LWYSO11E/Willard_clippingsfile+009.jpg The Watsons -
